1. Eastern Orthodox: the emperor claims authority over the patriarch and the bishops of the empire, Roman Catholic: pope claims authority over all kings and emperors.
2. i don't think they could, they are too different in who rules.

1. the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox were once united churches.
2. the main street running through Constantinople was linded with merchant stalls.
3. rulers ruled with absolute power.
